American musician Jeremiah Martin Green (March 4, 1977 – December 31, 2022) is best known for being the band’s drummer and founding member from 1993 to March 2003 and again from May 2004 till his passing in December 2022.

While still in high school, Green started his touring and recording career. Green collaborated with Red Stars Theory, Peeved, and Satisfact in the middle of the 1990s on Touch and Go Records, Touch and Go Records, and Distressed Records, respectively.

Green also performed with the Vells and another group called Psychic Emperor. Both bands performed in the Pacific Northwest and at venues near Seattle.

Green left Modest Mouse in 2003 on the day of his birthday. He would later disclose that he had a nervous breakdown and had a brief stay in a mental facility. He had previously been given the antidepressant Effexor after being identified as having bipolar disorder.

He went through severe manic episodes after using psilocybin mushrooms along with alcohol. When Green first left, the band immediately persuaded him to come back, but on the second day of recording in Portland, he lost it in a fight and “disappeared” for two months. He would stop taking his antidepressant and go through a tough withdrawal period.

The absence of Green initially caused Modest Mouse to ponder disbanding. The Helio Sequence’s Benjamin Weikel finally took over for Green. The band’s 2004 album Good News for People Who Love Bad News was completed without Green because of his departure. In May 2004 Green formally made a comeback with the group.

Green made an appearance in 2007 on the Sonic Boom Label’s Via Novella by Graig Markel. Under the alias World Gang, Green collaborated with Plastiq Phantom to release a drum breaks 7″ on the Imputor? label in May 2008.
